Wild on Wednesday brought forward to Monday..

Hi guys..i was unable to do a Wild on Wednesday last week..so busy getting things done outside..this week with some ups and downs with Pickles I am doing an early Wild feature…I think we have had so many sad animal stories the last week or so that an early smile and maybe even a squee is called for…
Now I am thrilled with these pictures..they were hard to get..but I was honoured that Mum felt safe enough around me to allow her little babe out of the pouch..this small group has been very close to the house and the day I took them I was actually taking bird pics..when I turned to follow a bird’s flight path I saw below the embankment this family..

Mum was having a snooze…

Mum was fast asleep

Mum was fast asleep

Until she spotted me..

A sweet spot to rest up with the family

A sweet spot to rest up with the family

Of course you may all remember Nicky the little joey I introduced you to before..

Nicky ..she may be used to seeing me..growing like a weed..

Nicky ..she may be used to seeing me..growing like a weed..

Dad went about his grazing..a bit more wary of me than mum and Nicky …

Dad multi tasking..eating and keeping an eye on me ..

Dad multi tasking..eating and keeping an eye on me ..

Now mum must have been already holding a new joey in her pouch when I first showed Nicky to you all…

Yep..mum has a very full pouch..again!! and see that little head trying to eat the grass

Yep..mum has a very full pouch..again!! and see that little head trying to eat the grass

I was beside myself with joy when all of a sudden that pouch started rolling around like a wrestling match was taking place..

Don't make me come in there!!

Don’t make me come in there!!

I will set the day for you..it was beautifully warm with a gentle breeze..the smell of Eucalypts only faint..birds chirping and flying around..i wonder if the breeze was annoying mum as she seemed to have an itchy ear..

Boy this ear is itchy!

Boy this ear is itchy!

So I settled on the ground..mum still not really concerned…and I sat amongst the dandelions..bees everywhere and allergic as I am we have an agreement..they don’t sting me and I won’t bother them…I waited..covered in grass stains from trying to position myself without worrying the family..and then I was given the greatest present ever…now they are not perfect because i had grasses and trees in my way..and to move around anymore I would have ruined a perfect moment…but if you look closely…

Look at that sweet little creature !

Look at that sweet little creature !

I introduce to you Tippy..new sister or brother to Nicky..this baby fell out of the pouch and stumbled and seemed to have no clue what those giant feet were for..the joey kept falling over and mum kept nudging and grooming him/her..it was one of the most magical times I have had..she felt safe enough to allow this while I was there…amazing…so due to the stumbling and falling I called this little one Tippy…

Boy these big feet are really hard to drive mum!

Boy these big feet are really hard to drive mum!

See the joey ..standing close to mum and looking all around at the big world…it was a perfect spot for a nursery for the big footed babes 🙂
Typical baby ..wanted back in again pretty quick…

Mum let me in!!

Mum let me in!!

And then out again…..

Nup ..still can't drive these feet mum...

Nup ..still can’t drive these feet mum…

And so that was it..back in…safely in mum’s pouch where you do not need to use the feet ..

Hey this is pretty good..

Hey this is pretty good..

And then my battery started to die in the camera…I knew it..so I bid farewell to the family that made my day so special and made me feel like I was privileged to be a part of Tippy’s big day out…and mum even waved goodbye to me too 😉

Bye bye strange lady..and thankyou for respecting my space...

Bye bye strange lady..and thankyou for respecting my space…

Have a wonderful week..i hope you all get to feel a part of something magical this week..something that makes you see the beauty close to you…

A closer look at the manicure

I know the image of Kangaroos is something like Skippy…whose vocalisations were rubbish and not at all a sound any roo has ever made..they chuff or stomp their feet…or cough…not tut tut tut sounds…
Anyway I digress…let’s study the manicure….this is quite blurry as the original was not crash hot and on blowing it up it is a bit fuzzy..however I think you will agree..these are some serious weapons they have…

For those who asked

I know I have been showing lot’s of roo pictures and please let me know if it’s getting boring guys..i tend to get a little excited when I see them! I know I live with them all the time and I am an Aussie but I never take for granted the wonderful roos that we live with.
I have had a few really good questions about them and so I thought I would share some of the facts I know about these beautiful animals with you.

The Eastern Grey Kangaroo is the species we live with here..this amazing Roo is born 36 days after conception..the size of a Lima bean it ‘swims’ it’s way up to mums pouch on the fur she has licked in a trail..once inside mums pouch the tiny little joey latches on to a teat and clings firm ..mum has four teats..and this new baby will be here for at least 6 month..at which stage it will poke it’s head out of the pouch..it will hop out at about 8 months old but still be mainly reliant on mums milk up to 12-18 months..
Mum is amazing as she changes the protein levels in her milk according to joeys age!
She can become pregnant soon after having a joey and can keep that embryo in ‘limbo’ until the joey leaves the pouch..at which stage this little one begins life..this is in case the joey dies or leaves she always seems to be pregnant!! poor mum hey!

Females stay with the mob as they grow but the males leave to join bachelor mobs..as only one Alpha male is entitled to breed with the females.

A fully grown Eastern Grey Kangaroo averages 25-30 kilograms
The Males 55-65 kilograms with the Alpha male getting up to 80-90 kilos
Females stand at 1.8 metres and males at 2.2 meters
Adult males are called Boomers..Females called Does, Flyers or Jills.
The Eastern Grey can travel at a comfortable hopping speed (they do not run) of 20-25 km(13-16mph) but up to 70km(44mph) over a short distance.
If they need to they can sustain a speed of 40km(25mph) for a distance of 2km (1.2miles)
They can jump Horizontally 9 metres at full speed! they can leap 3 metres (10feet) high.
They cannot walk backwards and cannot use their hind legs independently on land but are good swimmers. They use their long tails as a tripod with their forelimbs (arms to me:) ) to move forward and also use these huge tails to balance on when boxing..they do this by raising their powerful hindlegs and kicking forward and then dragging the feet and claws down..they have been known to disembowel dogs when threatened and also when chased will head to water where they will use their legs to drown the dog or predator.
When distressed they will rub their hands together ..when they feel threatened they will stomp the ground to warn the MOB ..if they cannot jump a fence they will go under or crawl through..the safety of a mob means they can scatter if threatened and confuse the predators..mums and joey’s often try and keep out of this as it is scary for the young…
They make funny coughing chuffing sounds and I have heard this and it is quite bizarre indeed.
So there is a bit of info on the furry ones I share my home with and the pictures will show mobs on the run…jumping over fences ,climbing under and going through as you will see it depends on the size of the roo as to how they get out from a fenced yard.I was watching from my top paddock and a good distance and you will notice how the biggest male stands his ground and puffs his chest out to check me out..mums with curious joey’s poking out from the pouch and young ‘at foot’ joeys..i wonder when mums jump if the joeys get a little head ache!!!
I hope this answers some questions you had about these beautiful and intriguing creatures Marsupials known as Macropods 🙂

Holly seems to have a new boyfriend

I was so excited to see that Holly and Boo were out grazing in the company of a very big male…

Holly is in the middle here Boo on the left..and those of you who have seen my pics of Holly and Boo have a good idea of the size of Holly so you can see how big this boy is!!

He is not the biggest Roo around but he is young and strong and will be an even bigger boy as he gets older..Indeed since the bru haha of a last year the dynamic has changed…and this is the first we have seen of Holly with another roo other than Boo since then.

I have called him Indie …he seems to be happy with Holly and Boo and maybe independent so from independent I get indie 🙂
