Bacons big reveal party

Welcome one and all to my good friend Bacon’s big reno reveal!

Boy what a ride and we all know the ‘joy’ of reno’s..they are one of the most stressful things a normal person can do…well normal may not be the word!

Bacon has been through a huge change at his place and after many years of either bad health or work it was time to refresh..oddly you have to semi kill yourself to get refreshed!

I understand only too well..the last house we had it was the bathroom dude from ACME bathrooms…may as well have been..note to self we can build a better bathroom…just sayin..

I have smashed old fibro cement walls out and nearly discombobulated myself in the process..i have spent so much time pulling old 60’s tiles of bathroom and laundry floors that i started to actually see the face of Jesus in them..seriously..drove me mad..i have painted until my feet and fingers were about to drop off..had they done so i would not still be waging war on the painting of the fences here by brush..urghh..

Here we have pulled out a kitchen.,..yes it was a treat…some pics of the festive event..

How's that colour..

How’s that colour..

Urghhh

Urghhh

Yep..a beaut..

Yep..a beaut..

Of course Doc and Forrest played the part of tradies assistant..when Phil went to work i took over...i will never look at slate the same way..

Our handy tradie was the BEST..such a great guy..

Our handy tradie was the BEST..such a great guy..

Sometimes you just have to call in the big guns..

Love me a machine

Love me a machine

Well we survived here..barely..and still have a main bathroom and ensuite to do..all the flooring which has split due to drought..and the bedrooms need painting and reflooring..the list goes on..so while we have a rest let us all have a bit of a celebration and salute the latest reno achievers.

I know Bacon and his family have culled until they could cull no more and decluttering is so therapeutic..so in celebration of this great reveal..i invite you all to grab the stuff you want to declutter and throw it on the bonfire!

Go for it folks!

Go for it folks!

Oscar will help he loves a good bonfire…and i know Bacon has some great food at his place for his reno reveal party but also we have here some grub..so grab some and head to Bacon’s with a plate..

My homemade Macarons..

And since Bacon Loves Apples..grab some of these to take ..

Delish!

And i would be remiss as a co-host if i did not offer some of prize winning Apple Pie..yes it did NOT win this year although in a strange turn of events i did receive a certificate in the mail for best decorated Apple pie..

Hot and delish folks

Now you all enjoy Bacon’s Southern Hospitality and go enjoy the new reveal..a long time coming and well worth all the hard work !

Shopping Around the World

Hi guys and it’s another trip to the great halls of food and wonky trolleys…

images-1

My good mate Bacon and i have been having so much fun learning about the way we all shop..the things that we buy and the costs that are so varied across the world..not just what the leaders in countries say we pay but real time real people prices..

This week i am proud to announce Australia is the winner..yes we have been nominated the most EXPENSIVE country in the world to live in…Bravo!

So before my dodgy at best internets has a hissy fit again here we go with this months list!

Now as we approach Winter the task of discussing costs of heating/cooling and thermostats finds us at the cooler end of the scales.

Now during winter here we get cold, not arctic cold as in our Northern Hemishpere friends but cold enough.

For me that means the house needs to be a constant warm temp..as we have super insulation i am grateful..double brick also helps.

I prefer the rooms which are mainly open plan to be around 22C seems a bit warm for some but old mate Athritis dictates it to be warm.

To do this we have an annoying but handy gas wall heater which is a last ditch run out of wood way to heat the house.

Now if we have no wood this bad boy will use (for cooking we are gas as well and water heating) during a cold snap a bottle a week at $100.00 so as you can see we get wood! and that means either trees that have fallen and can be used from our property(after checking they are not habitat) or buying in loads of wood.

Now to cut and stack your own is great..but it has to be available dried and it is time consuming when hubby is working. So we try and do this weekends. We have a few trees that Rabbits have under pinned which need removing (i love them but they really are destroying at a rapid rate 😦 ) but it will still need to dry..green wood not good for the flue…

The search for wood..

The search for wood..

A load of wood we get is usually a cubic metre and costs $140.00 and depending on the quality could last a month..sometimes less sometimes more.

So that is our heating for Autumn /Winter.

I must say as much as i love a wood fire i look forward to the day i can have push button heating and cooling…no dust ash fireboxes to clean..urghhh.

Now next item: Fave meat..well i do not really have one, i am pretty much a what i am in the mood for gal..and this week i have craved Mussels!

This week a kilo of Mussels cost $6.00

Freshly farmed Mussels

Freshly farmed Mussels

They really are delicious take no time to cook and only six hours to scrub and debeard…just sayin…

The next item was the go to vegetable..i am so happy my veggie beds are almost finished..i am sick of the quality and price of some veggies and really prefer my home grown.just one bed gave us 15 kilos of tomatoes this summer..fantastic!

This week my go to veggie is the red capsicum or red bell pepper i think my USA friends call it…always dearer than green but full of goodness.

A less than perfect capsicum

A less than perfect capsicum

I paid $1.91 for this one..they are $8.69 a kilo this week..

My random item is one i use a bit and i had run out..it is always a dear item as it is the most labour intensive spice and therefor you pay for it.

The item is Saffron..the product of a crocus flower..

Tiny little packet

Tiny little packet

At $7.48 for 5 grams it is more expensive than gold i think…works out at $1.496 a kilo….

I use it sparingly as it is strong in colour and flavour so it does last a long time..i used about 5 or 6 strands last night.

Which brings us to homemade dish of the month…

I have been craving ,as i said, Mussels and apart from Mussels moulinere i felt like Paella..

So last night as the internet war waged and hubby was on the phone trying to sort it out and my never ending email debacle i gathered my goodies.

Mmmmmmm

Mmmmmmm

The first step is to take your mussels and scrub them then debeard and wash..

Take one and a half red onions and finely dice..Take either half a cup of white wine or fish stock and add 2/3rds of you onions..heat until bubbling (in a decent pot) add the mussels put the lid on and gently shake for about 3-5 minutes or until they open.

Remove from heat and drain reserving the mussel liqor.

If you have a paella pan great if not take a wide based pan or pot and heat half a cup of olive oil add the remaining onion..one finely diced red capsicum 4 crushed cloves of garlic a small amount of diced speck (or bacon)  and some strips of chicken ..saute for 5 minutes.

Add one diced fresh tomato one small diced Chorizo or other spicy deli sausage and a pinch of cayenne pepper and some smoked paprika about a half a teaspoon salt and freshly ground black pepper and reserved liqor from the mussels and i cup of paella rice.Stir.

Add 2 cups of heated chicken stock which has been infused with about 5 or 6 saffron threads (you can use the powdered saffron but use caution as it is super overpowering) stir until all well mixed bring to the boil then reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 15 minutes without stirring.

After 15 minutes remove the chicken if almost cooked and put to one side.

Put some frozen peas about half a cup on top and push gently into the rice(i like frozen as they cook down and stay bright and do not mush up) if you have green prawns add them now and also push them in to the rice..cover the pan or pot and leave on low heat for ten minutes.

After 5 minutes add mussels to the rice and finish cooking for the next 5 minutes..if the rice is not quite cooked add a small amount more of hot stock but do not stir just pour on top (mine was fine so i needed to add nothing ) .

When done turn off heat and rest for 5 minutes.

A good paella will have a crusty bottom referred to as the ‘ Soccarat’ because i used to burners to cover the size of my paella pan my Socarrat was mainly in the centre and the outside..i usually cook paella on the bbq with a more even wide based heat.

Makes no never mind to me it was super delicious.

Paella

Paella

Now the total cost worked out at $33.00

This gave hubby and i two serves last night and a meal each for lunches..so $5.50 Per person per meal which to me is good value!

So there you have it another fun shop around the world..thanks for joining Bacon and i again and please have fun seeing what everyone ‘cooks’ up this month!

Meet …greet… and eat

Well everyone today was a big day..Phil and i headed off to Melbourne for my appointment with the rheumy..who was lovely and all of ten years old..but she knows her stuff so i felt quite happy with her and confident she has the latest in autoimmune diseases.
So we left home at 7am ..took 2 hours of painful traffic..had my appointment..had my bloods stolen..and left.
We headed to see our little girl (yes 29 and still my little girl) had a coffee and a chat and dang forgot to grab some figs that were growing like crazy in her backyard!

We then headed off to Lygon Street..home of little Italy and cakes cakes cakes…yes..

Bashful says farewell to Australia

Well we have had a ball taking Bashful with us on holiday up to Cairns.
We tried to make sure he saw as much as we did and experienced all that the Northern part of our beautiful country has to offer…sun sand sea and rainforest.
I think he had a ball..this is the second time he has visited us and it was a long time in the planning!
In fact when we booked our holiday early in 2014 i spoke to Bacon and the plan was hatched! so we kept the secret for nearly a year..amazing for me!

This week the little guy will wing his way home..and i am sure he has many tales to tell..and i also believe he has a little explaining to do!! (more of that later 😉 )

So i have got a little group of pics to show as we bid our little mate farewell and say safe travels…

Shop til you drop

Well again it’s time to join Bacon and I in a blog hopping shopping trip..

shopping trolleyjpg

Please do not TRIP on your trip…

Just sayin...

Just sayin…

We enter the arena of wobbly wheels in search of these goodies this week:

Olives..yes I love me an olive…my faves are dried and hard to come by they are more intense in flavour and kind of sweet..but this week I got my next fave..the pitted Kalamata olives..i bought a box once an tried to preserve them myself..it just didn’t happen despite my best daily efforts at rinsing and rebrining..oh well…thanks to the Deli I do not have to go without!

Kalamata Olives

Kalamata Olives

At the deli this week they were $14.99 Aussie dollars a kilo

Next is Room defunk-ifyer..usually this old 60’s baby burns incense..my fave being Frankinsence or White Sage..the Frankinsence reminds me I am sure of a past life in ancient Egypt (and explains my kitty love and various statues).I can close my eyes and imagine I am in front of a pyramid..ahhh
The White Sage I burn when I think there is too much negativity around (see there’s a side to me you may not know)
But when I want a long lasting and gentle smell through the house I burn this bad boy….

Delish

Delish

It’s an Airwick Essential oil candle (apple and cinnamon this week )
And it cost $6.26 Aus dollars this week on special saving about $2.00

Next is Lettuce..now may fave is cos or I think my American friends call it Romaine? but they were not available..ironic winter is the best time to grow lettuce and summer is when we want it.
So I settled for the much underrated Iceberg..which as a child I used to sprinkle sugar on the leaves and eat..ewwww.go figure!

Sorry I ripped into it for a sanga:)

Sorry I ripped into it for a sanga:)

And this lettuce this week cost a ridiculous $2.99 Aus Dollars! nuts!

The next item was light globes..pretty much all we can get are energy efficient..which cost a bomb and despite the claims of super long life..die well before they should..of course being warrantied you can get a replacement as long as you can find the receipt..which we now put into the empty box..so we have a cupboard full of empty boxes..this will end up an episode of hoarders..just sayin…

Let there be light

Let there be light

Since we oddly did not need one for a change I have no correct price but they run at about $10.00 Aussie dollars i think..
And now the Random item..

Quinoa

Quinoa

Yes Quinoa..i love this stuff..i use it as much the same way as couscous but the various colours are a super delish alternative..
I can add anything it cooks up beautifully and is super good for you..because they say it is bwahaah.

It costs $19.90 Aussie dollars a kilo which has come down a bit since all the cool folk started to cotton on to it..amazing how expensive things are when they are unpopular.
But then there are now many many Coeliacs now and the Gluten free products are still rudely expensive!

So there you go my list done..being absent so much i thank Bacon again for being a stalwart at the shopping blog post..and now..time to put the feet up and have an olive..with a glass…and maybe some Vermouth…
Thanks again for joining the shop til you drop blog hop and have fun checking out everyones carts 🙂 loves Fozziemum x

Shopping around the world

Well I have been awol..and remiss in blogging for not quite a week and yet it seems like forever..i haven’t been well but am fine now and look forward to attempting to catch up…urghhhh so again Bacon and I are at the shops..this time with a healthier trolley…

This is an interesting one as always the fruit and veggies will be very different due to seasonality..i always try and buy in season as the quality is superb and believe it or not whatever is in season is usually what your body needs for the time of year also..and the costs should be better…

So let’s grab a trolley..and some running shoes and head to the shops..

shopping trolleyjpg

First on the list is Apples…I love Pink ladies…they are crisp..sweet and a bit tart..i love them fresh..stewed and of course I use them with Grannies to make my award winning Apple Pies and cakes..

Apple-side-piejpg

Pink ladiesjpg
Pink ladies this week are $5.99 Aus kilo..they are not really in season and can get down to a much better price in February..my Apple trees are waking up from winter at the moment..

Strawberries…love them ..love to make jam from them when they are in season..which they aren’t at the moment..
Strawberries

A 250gram punnet is on special this week for $1.99 Aus

Carrots I love too…and they make great cakes 🙂
This week they are $3.29 a kilo..still a bit pricey!
Carrots

Beans are next..and boy have they been expensive!! I prefer fresh and love them steamed and then tossed with some garlic and sautéed mushrooms..but the prices have been up to $12 Aus a kilo!
green beans
I buy green round beans..and in the right season I love broad beans..double peeled and tossed in pasta with some lemon zest and pancetta…

This week they are $9.89 a kilo Aus…

Lettuce…wow what a variety now..when I was little it was only iceberg available…and for some reason I would eat the leaves with a sprinkle of sugar??? yuk!!
I usually buy a lettuce mix with rocket and other goodies..
lettucejpg
This week iceberg lettuce is $2.69 Aus each..
Funny the lettuces grow best in winter ..
Now on to our random choices…
My random Fruit is an all time fave ..Blood orange or cara cara..such a beautiful fruit..i make a lovely blood orange curd tart..too die for ..only available for about three minutes a year it seems and on my tree list to buy.

20140924_103733
This will be my morning tea..
At $6.39 a kilo Aus this week…worth every bit..
And my random vegetable is the Celeriac..
celeriac

What a bizarre knobby and weird looking veggie..but I love them..they make a delicious puree with roasts after simmering until tender in some milk..yumm
This week they are $5.59 Aus each!
So that is this weeks list..thanks so much for sharing your shopping experience with Bacon and myself..and I will get around to visiting you all soon…lots of news and things happening and very much on the hop

Bacon’s show and tell

Well my darling friend Bacon has asked up to remember the one thing from our childhood that we could play with forever and ever..that one thing that we loved and remembered fondly..well here goes…

bacons-show-and-tell

Mud and water......

Mud and water……

Yep…I was a tomboy..and whenever I had the chance I would head to mud..and water…I could play with it for hours..i loved to make things from clay and watch them change in the sun and bake..i had no fear of getting dirty..still don’t..i loved the smell of the earth when it was wet…I loved looking for worms and bugs…slater beetles..snails..real grub I was…

Water

Water

And water I loved water..the pool we had..the rivers I would visit with my grandparents on road trips but most of all the beach and the ocean…every summer we headed there..fishing swimming playing in the sand..
If I could have stayed in water or mud all year I would have been the happiest child on the planet…

Squishy mud....

Squishy mud….

I still play with the mud..its called gardening…and I still love the water..yet do not get as much chance to be in it anymore..the kid in me still loves the smell of wet earth…the ground here is not quite as soft and yielding as where I played as a child..but my love of feeling the Earth in my hands and the freedom of floating and diving into water will always be my greatest joys 🙂

Even if the neighbourhood horses find the whole thing hilarious…

QUIT HORSIN AROUND LADY!

QUIT HORSIN AROUND LADY!

Shopping around the world

Yes guys it’s shopping time again…and the trolley’s are loaded and ready to checkout…truth be told we ALL feel like checking out after shopping!!
So Bacon and I have our lists..we are checking them twice..let’s see whose country is naughty and whose country is nice hahahaha:) I have not done the conversions as my eyes just can’t keep going back and forth hahhaaha 🙂

Today we have H2O ..yes that stuff we have in abundance ..but it’s all salty…
So many of us buy water..our tap water here is brilliant..tastes great..and not much of an issue…no offence but the water in Adelaide..so far in my travels …is the pits!!

A 12 pack of frantelle 600 ml bottles is $7.55 Aus

Next in the trolley we throw some soap…now I love this soap..it was a fave as a kid and still a fave..the wrapper has not changed since I was a wee lass..
Cussons Imperial Leather…I think the little label on the soap makes me feel a tad posh hahahaaha and at $3.79 for 4 bars it is not at all priced poshly 🙂 I also have numerous Lush soap products which are divine..all vegan handmade eco friendly and cruelty free..they are my bath tub soak feeling sorry for myself go to treat 🙂 go checkout Lush website and drool at the girlie delights 🙂

On to the laundry aisle..urghhh washing ok ..so I use Earth

I use mainly Earth and Method cleaning products..they are reasonably priced and are made with many considerations….Earth laundry detergent 1 kilo box $6.65 Aus

I find them incredibly effective and they have animals the environment and cleanliness all in the big tick box for me.

Now on to the personal pongfree aisle..deodorant..for me it changes…depending on my mood..but usually I use this Dove ..it smells lovely works well doesn’t irritate and is not badly priced..

So a 100 gram can is $4.99 Aus dollars..

Now for the random item…

Yep that’s right….what the!! ok I had to cringe and shuffle up to the checkout as I believe no human has ever purchased these bad boys!!…
They are actually comfy hahahaah yes I tried some on …and NO I did not take a picture! at$5.80 for a two pack..well you get what you pay for..

Now I have no idea WHY a man would need these..the list of reasons on the packet are mind boggling…does your man travel and forget undies?? does your man have regular accidents when out?? does your man need more space?? I mean how much space do undies take up??

At least he will be prepared for any event! now they were as I said comfy..and I must say I had a hard time explaining to Fozziedad WHY I had bought men’s disposable undies..but I confess..i would have grave concerns for any man wearing them..they were not exactly…well..how can I put this…supportive or solid..i would be worried that your man’s bits may end up splayed out the side like a xmas decoration..or even a break in the fabric (as such..more like paper ) could render your fella with a blowout worthy of a Grand Prix high speed tyre incident…with I think the same amount of fear attached!! hahaahhahahh

So that is the list and Bacon and I are always pleased to get ideas on more items we can use for the list! so drop us your ideas..and let’s have fun..make sure to pop in and see all the other peeps lists and link up if you can 🙂  and thanks for joining our shopping day 🙂

Shopping around the world

Well here we go again..Bacon and I and the dreaded shopping list….we all love the thrust and parry of shopping not…but one thing we DO love is the fun or surprise of sharing the prices from around the world..not the so called prices that we hear about on the tv or read about..but prices..YOU the shopper  who actually buys the goodies in your part of the part of the world pays…

So the list was:

Toilet paper

Regular packet of mince (ground meat)

Store bought Pizza Kind and price

Packet of Hotdogs Kind and price

And…gulp ..Bacon price and kind

So for TP I love this one…soft and cute with little lab pups on it 🙂

I know I kind of feel bad using it but …what can I say…Pkt of 6 rolls about $4.84 Aus

Regular Mince..

Regular Mince on average about $8.99  Aus per kilo it is more expensive for heart smart mine (which is leaner)

Store bought Pizza..now I confess I cannot eve remember the last time I bought a store bought pizza..and rarely even have pizza from a restaurant…so this one looked the best of a bad lot..and I know it must be god because it’s made my the same Dr who makes my glazes and gelatines 🙂

This one was $8.05 Aus for a 375gram

Hotdogs..now this is one of my fave brands…and yes they are delish and they are as good as vegetarian because I am pretty sure they have no meat in them bwahaahha 🙂

These average out at $13.78  Aus a kilo …
