Summers End

Well what can i say..Summer left a few weeks ago..it left us with Autumn..slightly less relenting on heat but my energy has been zapped!

So many things have happened here and in the blog world and i know i will never catch up..and yes it seems to be my byline!

I have seen that many bloggers have experienced losses..this is so very sad and of course like life is always something we are not quite prepared for.

I have missed celebrations and commiserations but know i have felt them all.

I got to a point where i felt i had nothing to blog about and the longer i have left it the harder it has been.

Just starting seemed a daunting task!

And so as a tentative dabble back to a forum i love and have missed i want to share with you the last remnants of the Summer that nearly killed my spirit.

I planted almost as a joke some old sunflower seeds i had sat on the porch and carefully pulled from flowers i had grown two years ago.

They had sat in a box waiting for me to find some time for some frivolous gardening.

Nothing here is ever frivolous! hubby had made me some garden beds out back to try and bring more color to our grey/brown/parched world and as the new plants were popped in i threw these seeds in the ground behind them.

The idea being maybe they would offer the new plants some protection.

Well i did this so late in the season i expected not much to happen,in fact i had forgotten about them when they all started to shoot.

Thanks to our Summer refusing to let it’s heat go peacefully the Sunflowers thrived.

Hence the reason i have magnificent Sunflowers when i should have none at all.

I guess Summer decided to give me something to smile about.

Thankyou all for your patience with my 3 month abscence, it’s a long time and i hope these images from my garden can go some way to saying how much you all mean to me .

  1. I have long loved sunflowers……they are so happy – the color gradations have been a huge fascination for me for as long as I can remember. When at last they are tired and become droopy….heads down facing the earth, I find I’m feeling the same way so in a way, I think sunflowers are a reflection of how the long hot summers “get” to us. You have been missed of course – but once in a while it is wise to recharge our batteries. Catch our breath. Enjoy things blogging gives you little time for. Just plain BREATHE. Just pop in from time to time so we know you are all safe and happy. That makes US happy!

    Love, Pam (and Sam)

  2. Hi Bev, the weather has been AWFUL and the heat just went on and on! I thought of everyone where you are and I think we might have seen the last of the hot weather now. The sunflowers are lovely to look at. I just know you will feel much better now that the weather is a bit more sensible. Even the children have had enough of the heat! I am hoping to put up an Easter Bilby pattern tomorow. 😀 XXXXX

  4. So that’s what happened to our summer heat: it emigrated to the land of Oz. We had a very windy and rainy summer so far, with some really cold days thrown in. Poor Genis spent most of his summer indoors, that is why his blog is also rather quiet. Thanks for sharing the stunning pics, we love sunflowers.

  5. wow you planted your own suns in your garden to enjoy sun rays a little longer :o) my momma said sunflowers always remind her of Mr. Kings story where the sunflowers waited for new boys next to the haunted house… I better check if her mug contains really just tea, huh?

    • Hahahahahhaha oh Mr King has some super bed time reading for sure ..best done with the lights on and no special tea 🙂 i was surprised they grew! i forgot them..i threw some Hollyhock seeds in to and they are also growing..maybe it’s the can’t be bothered gardening style that does it 🙂 they are lovely and make me smile ..and soon ..well i have a NEW visitor who has been here on our property and THAT will make you smile for sure 🙂 go check Mums tea now hahhaah 🙂 Loves Fozziemum xx

  8. I know just what you mean Bev and it’s been the same here. I still do get my off-moments and then I just sit and watch my movies/series or walk around in the garden hoping to see something that will cheer me up. I am sort of glad summer is over. I will miss the swimming and as far as the heat goes, I really can’t complain too much. I do love Autumn though. Lovely, cool weather and I hope my Golden silk orb-weavers will be here this year again. 😀

Your sunflowers are absolutely exquisite and so are your captures of them. I sat here oooh-ing and aaaah-ing all the time. They are such gorgeous flowers and really do brighten up any day. I am also glad to see you are back. Missed you girl! 😀

Do not worry about ‘catching up’. It will never happen & you know all of us understand. Life ‘happens’ & sometimes blogging is last on the list. You have had ALOT to deal with between the Aussie Summer & all the Vet visits. The fact you even stayed in touch via FB was amazing!
And you know I sometimes just feel I/Siddhartha Henry have nothing to say…..I have been missing Nylablue so much the past few weeks….I don’t know why. I just accept this is what I feel & do not beat myself up!!!

  10. Hey FM…glad to see ya my friend! Your sunflowers are spectacular. I love the shade of a sunflower on a real hot day. Did you know they thrive on pee…I water them daily around here and we get huge sunflowers….I noticed at the end of the season they look like little old men….all bent over cause they’re heavy with dried black seed. Mom was going to roast them last year but she had lots to do at the end of season and the sunflowers got vetoed. Maybe this year. Mom says she understand where you’re coming from after being away for 2 weeks…she too wondered if peeps would find her …sorry my blog interesting. Really, I don’t know where she gets these ideas…its my blog anyway. If, you were totally gone we’d miss you very much and do understand about real life.

  17. Sweet Bev, I wish I could toss out seeds as a joke and have such lovely flowers spring up. I love sunflowers and these pictures are amazing and your sunflowers are beautiful. I understand about blogging I am having a difficult time with what to blog about. I am not posting very often at all and have not been visiting other blogs like I would like to. Just post when you feel like it and want to and about whatever you want. Not to worry if you are not in the mood to do blogging…it should be fun and enjoyable. I know you must be glad to see the heat of summer take leave for awhile. Lots of hugs, Maggie

  18. I hope those sunflowers gave you hope that there is always beauty out there, no matter how tough things get. We just went through a very tough time selling our house so we could buy our new dream house with 17 acres of land. There were times I thought the stress would kill me. But now we are in our new home and all of that is behind us. We are survivors, aren’t we all? At times we wanted to give up, but I’m glad now that we fought through all the garbage to get where we wanted to be.

  19. Such beautiful, happy sunflowers, Bev. You’re not the only one who has been absent. I’ve been trying to get back in the swing and catch up. I think we’re better off if we pretty much start where we are and move forward! Looks like you’re moving into your fall season as we’re heading into spring. It’s been over 20 years since I could really say that and mean it! We’ve been in our new place in North Georgia now for three months and we’re still not set up. I keep saying we old people tend to move slower! HA! I’m waiting anxiously to see what all will bloom here. We’ve been told we’ll have a lot of flowers around our house. Time will tell. We had daffodils and then another freeze took most of them away. But it’s good to reconnect with you, my friend. Sending wishes to you and yours for a glorious Easter. Hugs!

  21. Easter has been not so good here in Outback South Australia./ Unlike you, I only hear the thump, thump of the kangaroos in the dark when I am out walking with the dog. It has been very wet here and the kangaroos have not started congregation at the water drainage area. They only come here at when it’s dry out in the bush. Things have not been so good for us here, industries are falling by the wayside, businesses are closing up and leaving – Dick Smith, Mensland, Spotlight, Sazzy Shoes – to name a few – and there is a very real danger that the Steelworks will close – which will be catastrophic for the area and cause more damage than the closure of Holden in Elizabeth. This could become a ghost-town. One local High School, built to house 1200 students has less than 150 students. The weather has been strange and very draining at times. People are wearing the ‘Brave Face” but it’s a worrying time until Arrium Mining – (Former BHP Steel) decide mid April what it is going to do and if the State Govt and the Feds organise a financial bailout. For us, the bright spot was the Edinburgh Tattoo in Melbourne. I might think about Celtic Thunder in October, but we’ll see how things are.

    • It seems all over things are on edge..i hope there is some solution that can can keep community spirit going and some enterprise that can boost economy! Ghost towns are not what we need 😦 i agree the Tattoo was awesome..a stunning event and a real highlight for us too. And despite the terror of driving at night and avoiding roos it was a great night out 🙂

  22. I love the flowers – most of the land here is recovered saltbush and it’s probably the best soil for growing, provided you are really fond of weeds. The further south we go the better the soil is, which is probably why the major farmlands are down there and not up here. Anyway, it’s good to have you back again. We missed you and your lovely flowers and photographs.
