We did our best

Thanking everyone for their prayers and purrs for Pedro..sadly we were notified this morning that Alison was going to have to help him on his journey to the bridge.. We tried so hard and we really hoped he would pull through but he was a senior boy and may have been down too long with the cold and his old bones. He was with his Donkey family his Mum Alison and he was treated as we all deserve with respect and dignity and love. Hubby has taken this so badly..when you work so hard and try to have the best outcome you can feel like you have somehow failed. I have chosen the photo below and i will get this printed and framed and when Alison has had time to grieve i will give it to her. Pedro bought neighbours who had never met together..he had all of us talking to him in soothing words and rubbing his ears and telling him what a good boy he was..we tried we really did but he just did not have it in him..he had a lovely life and was living with a wonderful family..he will be sadly missed..i am so sad i only spent those few hours with him..but now i am able to meet his donkey friends and Alisons horse..we have been bought together over our love of animals and Pedro was the catalyst. Hubby is doubting his ability to take part in these animal rescues..a few members simply cannot cope..road trauma and human casualties they deal with all the time ..but these ones get some of the toughest men and women..i hope he still does..as having a person with such love snd respect for animals is what is needed.. Run free sweet Pedro i will never forget the time i was privileged to spend with you..

  1. Oh nooooo…. so much people crossed their paws and sent you good wishes… but sadly you lost this fight Pedro… I’m so sad for you and your friends…. but you get a place in my heart as the grey hero… but on the other side you are the evidence that this world can be warm and friendly too and that there are so much people with a heart and helping hands for animals…

  2. I have just had the opportunity to read yesterday’s post and now today’s. I am so saddened for Pedro, but all the love he has received since his accident has most likely made him more comfortable in his final hours. And he has done something wonderful by bringing you and your neighbor together. I will keep his mum in my prayers at this sad time. I know she will treasure that photo when you do give it to her. Sending hugs. ❤

  5. Pedro was one tough donkey. That he survived the ordeal and could be with his loved ones for the end, instead of being alone and stuck in a cold and muddy pit is priceless. Your hubby is a prince to have been one of the people to end Pedro’s suffering and bring him back to his herd, where he belonged, and could be sent on his way over the bridge in dignity and love.
    We send your husband strength, love and gratitude.

  6. Phil;
    You did your best, Pedro knows you did your best, Alison knows you did your best, God His self knows you did your best. Indeed it is heartbreaking; and you will ask yourself probably 10 dozen times; what if, what if, what if…..truly, we’ve all been there emotionally; with a rescue, a neighbor or one of our own, yes it IS different from what your job requires, but please dont EVER doubt your ability; as Pedro was rescued and reunited with family and loved ones…. and in the end….that’s all he would have asked for. Promise…♥♥♥

  7. Pedro will be running free at The Bridge. Your hubby and his colleagues did their best and because of them he didn’t pass alone, cold and frightened. His memory will live on in the friendships built the day he brought you all together.

  8. We’re heartbroken to hear Pedro didn’t make it but honestly not surprised…..Pedro must have had quite a battle with that mud puddle for who knows how long and it just took every last bit of energy he had in his long life. Phil and the whole emergency team as well as all of your neighbors’ friends put EVERYTHING into helping Pedro and you did. He didn’t die in that quagmire – he died in his shed surrounded by love. Sometimes it’s the best we can do…………………sending hugs…………Bon voyage Pedro – see you on the other side little buddy.

  12. Sorry to hear of your loss. I’ve had to make that decision many a time myself, and it never gets any easier. My heart goes out to all of you involved in Pedro’s rescue and care. The last time I had to make the decision to euthanize was Old Klaatu, the wild feral cat who got me started blogging with a memorial to him. He was my first post.

    • Lavinia i agree those decisions are the worst..and they haunt you..yet we have the ability to keep an animals dignity and stop it from suffering..a double edged sword…Pedro was in the best of hands and we all are so sad he could not pull through . xxx

  13. I am so sorry for Pedro, but what a wonderfully long life. Please give your husband an extra hug and tell him that he mustn’t let this stop the great work that he is doing. There will be many more successful rescues that he will want to be a part.

  14. Please give Pedro’s Mom our condolences. Please give Hubby a big {{hug}} from us. I agree, losing an animal is so much harder for so many of us that deal with human trauma. Children and animals always rock you to the core, it is the innocence of them Bev.

  16. Darling Pedro…he had a good life. In fact Pedro was the equivalent of a 120 yr old Human!!!!! Please tell hubby we do our best in any rescue situation. Sometimes the person/4 legged/bird/sea creature does not pull thru & this is a part of Nature. What is truly magnificient is that WE continue to try & to be OUR best for the world around us!!!! That is worth the loss even tho it hurts so much at the time!!
    Run free Pedro….you will be remembered….
