Hi guys..well the internet war continues..the landlines are back on..one phone though is dead..so needs replacing..hubby talked to the telco’s and they tried to explain the in’s and out’s of what is going on..i am still no clearer..so as i have been going bats over this..it struck me..bats!
Well grey-headed flying foxes to be exact.
These sweet and much maligned creatures live in a colony in Bendigo’s Centennial Park.
Before hubby and i headed to dinner in town for his birthday we went for a stroll through here..we caught them as they were just starting to stir from their sleep.
I have been meaning to get pictures of them since we moved here so long over due.
The grey -headed flying fox is listed as Vulnerable on our species list. The adults have wingspans up to one metre or 3 feet and weigh in at a kilo or 2.2lb.
Please enjoy going ‘batty’ with me ..
ug not a bat person, I like the last picture though, flowers are good…. 🙂

Hahaha a lot of people aren’t..i find them intriguing..i guess Bela Lugosi and Vincent Price made them most unpopular in vampire movies 🙂 i find it hard to not be amazed by all animals..go figure..and i agree the flowers are good the gardens all fresh after a stinky summer 😉 hugs Fozziemum xxx

guess what? my momma said she had no clue that Kiwi’s have a black skin first…. Please Santa bring glasses to that woman…. It’s great that batman and his friends have always an umbrella on board :o)

Hahahahah 🙂 i agree a built in umbrella is a super thing to have..they started to talk to each other as they woke..pity the sky made it super hard to get good shots..but the time they are active is the time my camera skills pass out 🙂 loves Fozziemum xxx

OMD they are humongous. I just read up about them on Wiki. They certainly are beautiful, but I hesitate to ask – what does the Eucalyptus flower that is part of their diet, taste like. The oil certainly smells vile. We have various kinds of bats here, but personally we are familiar with the vesper bats only (we rescued a fair number of babies from our cat). We feed them cow’s milk until the parents come back to claim them. The bigger bats love the meal worms that we feed to our birds.

The eucy oil is foul…the flower produces nectar like other flowers..which i assume is sweet as they are happy here 🙂 eucy flowers are a stark contrast to the tree itself..no grey or green but vivid and amazing flowers…brilliant red or crimson cream and yellow.stunning..the white gums here just finished flowering and they were full of parrots and other birds 🙂 i guess we grow big stuff down under Genis hahahhah the link Miss Pix put up in her comments was super cute!! as for eucy oil..best thing for a cold..clear the nose pronto 🙂 loves Fozziemum xx

We have those flowering gum trees here as well (imported from Oz!), but I’ve only ever seen the ones with the red flowers. The oil is well known in our household of chronic sinus sufferers.

Hahaahaa 🙂 did you know the blue haze over our mountains is the volatile oil..the hotter and more humid the bluer they are..it is these oils in the air that cause catastrophic fires to happen when partnered with the right conditions..dr google white gums and see the pretty flowers 😉

Whoa those are some wide wing spans. Ironically there was an article in our newspaper over the weekend about bats and setting up a bat house in your yard. Mom learned something she didn’t know. A bat has to drop a few feet to get the lift to fly. Most folks including mom thought they were swooping down at them but they aren’t …we love learning new things

Well i never Madi 🙂 i never knew either..they are an incredible creature and thanks to them we have have more understanding of sonar and utrasounds….we have to have special people care for bats here due to the lassivirusand hendra..hendra has been blamed for the deaths of some horses and a vet and vet nurse 😦 but due caution with all creatures is always wise..:) loves Fozziemum xx

They were sleeping and it was getting on dusk..the pics needed some lighting as it was pretty overcast and drab..but they were starting to wake for the evening 🙂 lucky indeed i see them hanging in the trees everytime i drive into the Bendigo but never have the time to stop 🙂 lucky indeed..i seem to get all the critters 🙂 xxx

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I’m surprised to see them in trees, as that is rare here, where they are not likely to roost In Caves and under bridges. And they’re so big! I’ve only seen much smaller bats, so this was wonderfully educational in several ways. Thank you!

You are so welcome 🙂 and thankyou …we have caves where bats also live but these sweeties prefer the gorgeous park where for now they are protected..being vulnerable is one step further up the species to lose list sadly 😦

Holy cow…LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the bat photos! A guy in Colorado Springs was having computer issues recently and took his computer out to the alley and shot it 8 times. He was charged with illegal discharge of a firearm. Everyone has computer troubles; but hopefully you won’t be shooting the modem any time soon. Wouldn’t want to disturb the fauna around your homestead. ❤

Bats kind of freak me out…and picturing ones with that big of a wing span really freaks me out! I think because when I was a child they always told us bats would fly into our hair…..They are interesting though, and I didn’t know there were species that were that big.
The garden is very pretty! xxoo
