Hi guys Well today i noticed the Roos were not in the street as i went out to the shops..so when i returned from the shops i took a walk down to the dam. I could see a big mob in the neighbouring property..so as i walked down to take some pics i stopped as i noticed a fox was taking a casual stroll through the paddocks. I sat down and started to take some pics..i was watching the Roos watching the fox.. I must admit that they are really a beautiful looking creature but sadly they are also quite brutal..of course it is there nature and it is the way they survive..but any farmer can tell you the devastation they cause. I myself have seen it when we had chickens at our old house..they kill as many as possible with the intent of coming back for them..they seldom do. And they do not stop at chickens or rabbits but also lambs and i think it would be fair to say joeys. So i watched waiting to see if the Roos would give the fox a hard time..seems apart from watching her they did nothing. It will be interesting to see if a Roo with a joey behaves differently..so i plan on keeping my eye out. I know foxes are hated by many people..and they are certainly not native to our country..being bought in by the colonists.but as with all creatures i try and see the beauty..knowing humans can be pretty brutal also. The second thing that struck me as i took pics was that i spotted a lone Roo..he did not see me for awhile and i actually almost missed seeing him. He was grazing alone but not too far from the others…when i looked at the pictures on my computer i could see he has a tattered ear maybe from boxing with others or from fences…clearly healed up so not a recent injury..i also noticed he was looking a bit thinnish ..his ribs a bit more pronounced than usual for a Roo. Perhaps the harsh summer has meant less feed for him ..when i zoomed in i could see his lashes were quite thick and not so much sweeping upwards..he looks to be a boy who maybe has been trying to start out on his own …i will keep an eye on him and if i feel he gets thinner i will call a rescue to see if they can check him out..he appeared very bright and uninjured and was grazing and quite content..i guess living on the land can age us all..i feel for this sweet roo…i have called him Shaggy due to his shaggy ear…..he will be easy to spot by them . So please enjoy my time at the dam..which as you will see is almost a puddle..and i hope you can appreciate the beauty of the fox……despite her reputation.. Hugs Fozziemum
You have your very own United Nations of animals right in your backyard.

Beautiful fox. They really are gorgeous creatures but you are right that they are very destructive. Shaggy does look a bit underfed but he is huge! The last picture is especially useful for my quest to create my roo.

I know..i was gald to see a fox having a beautiful moment….but they are rotters….Shaggy i hope will put on some weight when the grasses replenish..apart from his ribs he looked pretty healthy to me..you think he is huge wait till you see the whopper from the other paddock haahha 🙂 i am glad the pic helps 🙂 xx

I agree with you, a fox in a chicken stable can act like a tornado…. but it was great to see this fox having a drink :o) And the roo was impressing, what giant feet they have, I never saw it so close :o) Many thanks for inviting me to a day on your dam. How peaceful wildlife can be, let’s hope you see much more beautiful moments on your dam. And I hope Doc got good news today.

Thank you Easy..yes the fox as to do maximum damage before daybreak so goes nuts then usually just does not come back..i have seen it too many times…i was however fascinated to see one not doing anything other than having a drink and then a scratch..she then went and curled up like a pup and licked herself..a more docile scene i could not imagine..quite a contrast and for me a chance to see the beauty behind the ‘beast’..yes the roos have super big feet..and of course powerful..this boy i hope gets some more feed into him as the grasses start to grow.a bit thin for my liking..wildlife can be peaceful..they all play a role and i have a video i need to upload that shows all of them ..quite amazing to me 🙂 Doc went well today…he left a recycled breakfast bar in the waiting room to start with..refused to show Dr Mark his teeth properly..and so it went..he has a dental on Friday..they will do his nails then get rid of some warts that he knocks all the time ..Dr Mark will consult with Dr Rayya on his night time weirdness..they will run full blood panels prior to his dental..he has a small cataract in his left eye and has developed a slight heart murmur..so we will see what happens Friday 🙂 loves Fozziemum xx

It always amazes me that you can take any (probably) animal and in a certain position they can look very proud. It’s probably nothing more than me putting human perspectives onto the animals ………… but look at Shaggy in his upright/alert posture! He certainly looks very self assured and proud of his genetic heritage 🙂

I agree we can do that to animals..but i think their bearing and how they do things is often easy to translate into human behaviour..he is showing in animal language his height and his muscles and that he is aware i am there..i just think he looks proud 🙂

Yikes me too..had visions of running across the paddocks waving a 2 kilo camera and shouting “STOP in the name of humanity! ” hahahaha 🙂 they are beautiful and i guess they cannot help their drives and nature…xx

I was also thinking that the roos actually look dangerous and intimidating – one kick or swish with that tail and the fox (or small doggie like me) should be history!

You are right Genis..it;s the feet you have to watch..many dogs are killed by roos and i mean big dogs too..German shepherds etc..if they chase and corner one it will use it’s tail to stand on and then lift those legs and drag down..the nails will rip you to shreds..they ahev been known to have been chased to dams where they have goitten in and drowned dogs..if left alone they are fine..like all animals if cornered hurt or scared they will come out fighting,…and this is one animal you do not want to mess with 🙂 they only use their tail to balance on as they cannot walk..they kind of use the tail and side step..they also cannot go backwards 🙂 xx

That’s very interesting. I was wondering whether they use the tail to defend themselves – it really looks mean. Isn’t it wonderful how wild animals adapt to their territory to cope with danger? Unfortunately they are most helpless against their worst enemy – man.

Love the pictures. So interesting. We are aware of foxes here in Northern British Columbia. They are very pretty but terribly devastating to unprotected chickens and other small farm animals.
One night around midnight I was coming home from work when we lived in the other house and there walking up our street was a silver fox….I had never seen one before and he was beautiful. Not the least concerned about my car. I never have seen another.
Shaggy looks like he needs a good meal…it would be tough trying to strike out on his own and start his own mob….hopefully he’ll hang around and you can follow his progress.

bev….I didnt know fox were not native to Australia; that is a surprise, though I was as surprised when I slammed the car brakes on this past winter to keep from hitting one that had crossed the street; fox have not been seen around here in YEARS. we have red fox; or had, this lone fox was the first I’d seen since I was about 10, and that was a LOOOOONG time ago. your fox; she was looking for water I’d say though I hope she has moved on and wont cause trouble ….♥♥

The fox is beautiful…it is like that with foxes & coyotes here. they are lovely but being carnivores they are dangerous to certain animals & birds….
Like the Re tailed Hawk who swooped down & took a pigeon from the patio this past winter with me standign there watching. He was mighty…it humbled me I can tell you!
As for Shaggy he has a noble look in his eyes. I hope he can find good food & put some weight back on. Precious boy…..I KNOW you will watch over him Bev 😉

Beautiful fox. I once lived near an old barn that had collapsed. A mother fox had her kits there, and the little ones would climb up the roof, now at ground level, and use it for a slide. They would play and play while mother kept watch.

I am not a fan of real foxes. However they are fabulous pictures and the foxes were brought here against their will. perhaps we could round them up and send them back from whence they came? That fox looks so beautiful and funnily enough foxes make me the most money when I am selling amigurumi. A fox took my neighbours duck which was really sad. The photos of the roo boy are magic. That fox should be called “cheeky”!

Oh, you can really see Shaggy’s ribs! Great photos, Bev. I hope he will continue to do OK. We have fox right in our neighborhood, and have seen whole families at times. We don’t seem them too often though, but one time one sat down in our garden area watching the dogs play! They are pretty. We used to worry about them more when we had outdoor cats, but now the cats stay indoors so we don’t have to so much.
