A different view

Hi guys..well the internet war continues..the landlines are back on..one phone though is dead..so needs replacing..hubby talked to the telco’s and they tried to explain the in’s and out’s of what is going on..i am still no clearer..so as i have been going bats over this..it struck me..bats!

Well grey-headed flying foxes to be exact.

These sweet and much maligned creatures live in a colony in Bendigo’s Centennial Park.

Before hubby and i headed to dinner in town for his birthday we went for a stroll  through here..we caught them as they were just starting to stir from their sleep.

I have been meaning to get pictures of them since we moved here so long over due.

The grey -headed flying fox is listed as Vulnerable on our species list. The adults have wingspans up to one metre or 3 feet and weigh in at a kilo or 2.2lb.

Please enjoy going ‘batty’ with me ..

Shopping Around the World

Hi guys and it’s another trip to the great halls of food and wonky trolleys…

images-1

My good mate Bacon and i have been having so much fun learning about the way we all shop..the things that we buy and the costs that are so varied across the world..not just what the leaders in countries say we pay but real time real people prices..

This week i am proud to announce Australia is the winner..yes we have been nominated the most EXPENSIVE country in the world to live in…Bravo!

So before my dodgy at best internets has a hissy fit again here we go with this months list!

Now as we approach Winter the task of discussing costs of heating/cooling and thermostats finds us at the cooler end of the scales.

Now during winter here we get cold, not arctic cold as in our Northern Hemishpere friends but cold enough.

For me that means the house needs to be a constant warm temp..as we have super insulation i am grateful..double brick also helps.

I prefer the rooms which are mainly open plan to be around 22C seems a bit warm for some but old mate Athritis dictates it to be warm.

To do this we have an annoying but handy gas wall heater which is a last ditch run out of wood way to heat the house.

Now if we have no wood this bad boy will use (for cooking we are gas as well and water heating) during a cold snap a bottle a week at $100.00 so as you can see we get wood! and that means either trees that have fallen and can be used from our property(after checking they are not habitat) or buying in loads of wood.

Now to cut and stack your own is great..but it has to be available dried and it is time consuming when hubby is working. So we try and do this weekends. We have a few trees that Rabbits have under pinned which need removing (i love them but they really are destroying at a rapid rate 😦 ) but it will still need to dry..green wood not good for the flue…

The search for wood..

The search for wood..

A load of wood we get is usually a cubic metre and costs $140.00 and depending on the quality could last a month..sometimes less sometimes more.

So that is our heating for Autumn /Winter.

I must say as much as i love a wood fire i look forward to the day i can have push button heating and cooling…no dust ash fireboxes to clean..urghhh.

Now next item: Fave meat..well i do not really have one, i am pretty much a what i am in the mood for gal..and this week i have craved Mussels!

This week a kilo of Mussels cost $6.00

Freshly farmed Mussels

Freshly farmed Mussels

They really are delicious take no time to cook and only six hours to scrub and debeard…just sayin…

The next item was the go to vegetable..i am so happy my veggie beds are almost finished..i am sick of the quality and price of some veggies and really prefer my home grown.just one bed gave us 15 kilos of tomatoes this summer..fantastic!

This week my go to veggie is the red capsicum or red bell pepper i think my USA friends call it…always dearer than green but full of goodness.

A less than perfect capsicum

A less than perfect capsicum

I paid $1.91 for this one..they are $8.69 a kilo this week..

My random item is one i use a bit and i had run out..it is always a dear item as it is the most labour intensive spice and therefor you pay for it.

The item is Saffron..the product of a crocus flower..

Tiny little packet

Tiny little packet

At $7.48 for 5 grams it is more expensive than gold i think…works out at $1.496 a kilo….

I use it sparingly as it is strong in colour and flavour so it does last a long time..i used about 5 or 6 strands last night.

Which brings us to homemade dish of the month…

I have been craving ,as i said, Mussels and apart from Mussels moulinere i felt like Paella..

So last night as the internet war waged and hubby was on the phone trying to sort it out and my never ending email debacle i gathered my goodies.

Mmmmmmm

Mmmmmmm

The first step is to take your mussels and scrub them then debeard and wash..

Take one and a half red onions and finely dice..Take either half a cup of white wine or fish stock and add 2/3rds of you onions..heat until bubbling (in a decent pot) add the mussels put the lid on and gently shake for about 3-5 minutes or until they open.

Remove from heat and drain reserving the mussel liqor.

If you have a paella pan great if not take a wide based pan or pot and heat half a cup of olive oil add the remaining onion..one finely diced red capsicum 4 crushed cloves of garlic a small amount of diced speck (or bacon)  and some strips of chicken ..saute for 5 minutes.

Add one diced fresh tomato one small diced Chorizo or other spicy deli sausage and a pinch of cayenne pepper and some smoked paprika about a half a teaspoon salt and freshly ground black pepper and reserved liqor from the mussels and i cup of paella rice.Stir.

Add 2 cups of heated chicken stock which has been infused with about 5 or 6 saffron threads (you can use the powdered saffron but use caution as it is super overpowering) stir until all well mixed bring to the boil then reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 15 minutes without stirring.

After 15 minutes remove the chicken if almost cooked and put to one side.

Put some frozen peas about half a cup on top and push gently into the rice(i like frozen as they cook down and stay bright and do not mush up) if you have green prawns add them now and also push them in to the rice..cover the pan or pot and leave on low heat for ten minutes.

After 5 minutes add mussels to the rice and finish cooking for the next 5 minutes..if the rice is not quite cooked add a small amount more of hot stock but do not stir just pour on top (mine was fine so i needed to add nothing ) .

When done turn off heat and rest for 5 minutes.

A good paella will have a crusty bottom referred to as the ‘ Soccarat’ because i used to burners to cover the size of my paella pan my Socarrat was mainly in the centre and the outside..i usually cook paella on the bbq with a more even wide based heat.

Makes no never mind to me it was super delicious.

Paella

Paella

Now the total cost worked out at $33.00

This gave hubby and i two serves last night and a meal each for lunches..so $5.50 Per person per meal which to me is good value!

So there you have it another fun shop around the world..thanks for joining Bacon and i again and please have fun seeing what everyone ‘cooks’ up this month!

Modem Living is killing me

That’s right folks MODEM not modern..for the last two weeks my internet connection has had all the get up and go of ahibernating bear.

The circle of doom ever spinning..so every time i visit a blog..it spins…..waiting…waiting..you get the picture..

Finally the blog post opens ….the pictures…waiting to load…waiting….finally then i comment..waiting waiting…

Any attempt at trying to see or comment on blogger or blogspot is a nightmare…it just keeps spinning..no pictures loading..and well you get the picture (i hope you do because i don’t)

Hubby spent about an hour and a half on the phone to the service provider last night..we thought we had gotten to the bottom of it..and he also tried to get my emails fixed..

So this morning ..fresh start….same dang thing….and the bonus is now i get duplicate emails….i am losing my tiny mind…

I did a few posts and got them ready to post..stuck them away until the days i need them..tried to get some research stuff done..but the internet was soooo slowwwww…i tried Facebake..same thing…

I have been trying to read your blogs tonight and it is such a slow process that i gave up on blogger and blogspot ..sorry guys but seriously this is crazy slow…and even WP is slow…

It seems our Modem is getting it’s knickers in a not with the WI-FI on our computers and the T-Box may hold the clue..Hubby is fiddling with it now..i have not heard a blood curdling scream or any cussing…YET…

Our landline phones ..well one is dead the other is temperamental at the best of times..so that is another joy..

While all this happens we have a small field mouse which appeared in the laundry this morning…we saw it again tonight ..we do not know where it has gone..

Doc has the vets in the morning and is fasting..i do hope he does not find said mouse and ruin his fast..urghhhh…

Hubby is drying dishes and whistling…i have a feeling in my waters that when he goes back to the T-BOX all hell will break loose…

So if you do not see me comment..know i have tried and will keep trying..that i tried last night and threw myself at the mercy of the couch with a small biscuit and a sharp clawed kitty…seems i am not cut out for MODEM living…

And that is the end of my rant…:)

Monday by the dam

Hi guys Well today i noticed the Roos were not in the street as i went out to the shops..so when i returned from the shops i took a walk down to the dam. I could see a big mob in the neighbouring property..so as i walked down to take some pics i stopped as i noticed a fox was taking a casual stroll through the paddocks. I sat down and started to take some pics..i was watching the Roos watching the fox.. I must admit that they are really a beautiful looking creature but sadly they are also quite brutal..of course it is there nature and it is the way they survive..but any farmer can tell you the devastation they cause. I myself have seen it when we had chickens at our old house..they kill as many as possible with the intent of coming back for them..they seldom do. And they do not stop at chickens or rabbits but also lambs and i think it would be fair to say joeys. So i watched waiting to see if the Roos would give the fox a hard time..seems apart from watching her they did nothing. It will be interesting to see if a Roo with a joey behaves differently..so i plan on keeping my eye out. I know foxes are hated by many people..and they are certainly not native to our country..being bought in by the colonists.but as with  all creatures i try and see the beauty..knowing humans can be pretty brutal also. The second thing that struck me as i took pics was that i spotted a lone Roo..he did not see me for awhile and i actually almost missed seeing him. He was grazing alone but not too far from the others…when i looked at the pictures on my computer i could see he has a tattered ear maybe from boxing with others or from fences…clearly healed up so not a recent injury..i also noticed he was looking a bit thinnish ..his ribs a bit more pronounced than usual for a Roo. Perhaps the harsh summer has meant less feed for him ..when i zoomed in i could see his lashes were quite thick and not so much sweeping upwards..he looks to be a boy who maybe has been trying to start out on his own …i will keep an eye on him and if i feel he gets thinner i will call a rescue to see if they can check him out..he appeared very bright and uninjured and was grazing and quite content..i guess  living on the land can age us all..i feel for this sweet roo…i have called him Shaggy due to his shaggy ear…..he will be easy to spot by them . So please enjoy my time at the dam..which as you will see is almost a puddle..and i hope you can appreciate the beauty of the fox……despite her reputation.. Hugs Fozziemum

Autumn finally brings some rain

Hi guys..Autumn has finally given us some rain..not a lot but it’s better than none….and the temps have dropped so the fire is blazing and the pups and kitties are taking full advantage of any warm spot!

Today we filled two more garden beds..one to go and i think another to be built and then filled..so hubby was back and forth getting trailer loads of mushroom compost.

I have seeds that are sprouting for Turnips (i love turnip tops and they are an amazing super food too) i also have seeds sprouting for Kale and Cavola Nero and a weird Italian cauliflower that is green and almost shaped like a pine cone! i want to get beetroots in and other goodies so very excited.

We get good frosts which Brassicas all love so finger crossed we shall have lots of fresh veggies to eat and sell at the local green grocer.

My meltdown from the other day is over..i took a breath and have been slowly rebuilding all the work i undid..sorry for the rant but i was super cheesed off and tired …yikes!

An interesting trip to the naturopath last week has me on some supplements for low magnesium and other bits and bobs..first time i have ever seen my blood cells under a microscope..poor things…tired they are..clumping in some places..oddly shaped in others…very bizarre..the weirdest thing was the teeny tiny floaties around the red blood cells..the naturopath asked when i had last eaten and what i had ..seems these floaties are fat..and she said my liver was breaking them down fine so bravo liver! she did however say she could see why i was tired…so armed with things i cannot even pronounce i came home..i have been a good girl ..less carbs more proteins..cut back a bit on sugar and back in a month.

I even got an email with the pics of my blood cells…we really are an amazing machine!

I am also excited because this week i get my new car! yep Harry High Pants (the Rodeo) will still be here as during fire season i need it to get out of Dodge! and that is why i am getting for the first time in my life a car that is NOT a family car or a WORKHORSE car..i am getting a lovely sporty hatch.

So lot’s happening this week..Doc is off to the vet tomorrow morning. He has a tooth i believe needs to come out and if so then his nails need doing while he is under..i want the vet to check some of his warts as they get knocked and bleed…and i also want to discuss his weird night time behaviour.

He has taken to going out at night and sleeping outside on his bed..now this is odd for him..neither of the boys ever sleep out at night they are in our room..and usually the slightest breeze and Doc is shivering…so weird.i have had to lock the laundry door to stop him as ..and i know you will think i am odd….but my biggest fear is that if something is wrong and he passes away in his sleep i do not want it to be outside alone in the cold.

So i think maybe he has a little doggy dementia or perhaps a cognitive issue with night and day which can happen to pups..thing is we have never been lucky enough to have dogs live to 12  and 13..so this senior dog stuff is new to us too!

So now i head to bed..and leave you with pics from last winters flowers…only a couple as i am still mid photo wrangling!

Have a super week guys…Loves Fozziemum xxx

Fry-day on my mind

Urghhh yes those are the only words i have..

In my stupid attempt to clean up files today i have made my life even harder..seems i have got a massive mess to clean up after doing some ill thought out culling and shifting of pictures..

I am shattered..so much work down the drain..i have been spending entire days trying to do this..and what do i find tonight..

Missing…missing missing..yep..the photos are there but my moronic mind has lost them in the depths of my computer..seems i have stuffed up big time!

When i look at the amount it just breaks my spirit…i have a huge job ahead to get this sorted..i had hubby helping me as he is more computer savvy than i ..but he knows nothing about Lightroom…seems i do not either…how stupid i am…i made a simple mistake and now i have thousands of pics in limbo..

I feel like the world’s biggest idiot and am on the verge of bawling my eyes out..

I really do wonder why i am even bothering when i see how little i know..back to the drawing board for me…i had posts to do and visits to make and now at quarter to one in the morning i am just going to go to bed…

Sorry for the real bummer post..i feel totally deflated and have no faith in myself at the moment..

This is what happens when you bat outside of your league 😦

Wild on Wednesday

Hi guys…well looks like i am back with the Wild folk again..a return of the roos has meant i am spoiled for photo ops..

They are healthy happy and flourishing..many joeys in pouches and many young males who seem to outnumber the girls…this should make for some very interesting times ahead!

I have spotted some real whopper boys too..three so far..and even from a distance i can see they are BIG!.. they seem to be staying mainly in our back paddock..interesting when i go for a walk..need to be a bit careful i think ..

I have shown a brief video this week and have an extended one which i will try and get up next week.

With the roos we are always cautious on our street..but even more so as a few are really random in their jumping..and i have tried to capture a picture to show how close they get to the road and you cannot see them until the last moment.

They are super camo and often ‘camp’ as they call it by the verges and when a head pops up it scares the beejeebers out of you..i would never forgive myself if i hit one..we have a young healthy Male who seems happy to camp at the back of our property and by himself..he may be branching out and looking to start his own mob..he is not injured ( i always try and check) and is eating and happy….so maybe this is his time to be the man of his own family!

I spot him when i get home from the shops..i get out of my car walk over near the barn and through the scrub and gumtrees i can see him resting…we play this game when i leave and when i come home..he seems quite bored with me 🙂

I took some pics of him for you all and also have included some of the roo that was by the road on our street..it is a deadend street and we are the last house so he is safe..we all take extra care on our street..we are quite proud of our roos 🙂 he also show how well camoflagued he is..certainly born to live and survive in our bush environment..he watched me ..and in two hops was across the road and giving me the ‘look’…later next week i will post the pics of the funny little roo that was already on the other side…he played peek a boo with me..it is not easy to take a quick pic with my camera on my lap in the car..with a dirty windscreen..so forgive the roadside pics 🙂

Have a great day i am off to bed to catch some zzzzz’s

The roos are back and fighting fit

As i drove up my street yesterday i spotted my Roos…i say mine but in reality they belong to you too..they are after all part of our world we all share.

I feel so happy as they are a sign the cooler days are arriving…i am being super cautious as a few youngen’s have really no idea which way they want to go…so driving at crawling pace is the go..i don’t mind ..i would rather be crawling along because of the Roos than traffic congestion!

So at the edge near the road i spotted Mum and bub first…poor bub was trying to get back in the pouch but Mum made  a move for it..so bub had no choice but to follow!  ..and then when Mum gets to the dam she gives another Roo the shine on..i was killing myself laughing… ..and then another Roo gives bub the shine on…boy..they sure are edgy sometimes 🙂

Please enjoy these sweet neighbours of mine and have a great Tuesday 🙂
