Well hot on the tail of the post about the male roo Buster and his romantic intentions with Titch , today I saw some very amusing behaviour between a couple of young male roos.
To set the scene.. I had gone out the front with the intention of cleaning up the garden a bit..i spotted Titch and Tippy and another joey a bit older than Tippy..so garden gloves down and camera up.
Now the three were grazing happily away when an older male roo joined them..he was followed not long after by Buster and another smaller male.
Well the young male roo started to follow the bigger one around..and he was tugging at his tail.
Now at first I was a bit confused but I realised this was clearly a dominance game.
And he kept going, the older male just moving away all the time…and he was really tugging that tail!
Not satisfied with tugging his tail he started to sniff him as well..
Now clearly the other male is responding in his own way showing dominance..i think that is obvious to all..but this younger guy was really trying to show himself as a contender..
Eventually the bigger male stopped eating and decided he had had enough of this annoying young guy..
And then the rumble..it was short and not seriously aggressive ,just enough to let the younger male know who was boss..
And that was that..they looked up saw me and made out that nothing had happened..they continued grazing and left each other alone.
Another fascinating day for me and the reason it takes so long for me to get anything done here š
Young uns these days!

maybe that’s a special christmas ritual? …and we will celebrate an australian christmas, so it could be interesting. are they fighting serious and bloody or is it just a “lesson” to make sure that all know where their place is?

It may be Easy š no just a version of pushing and shoving..they rarely need to do any serious damage..they can but not often..would need to be a real need for dominance in a scarce food area or something š I can see your dad wrasslin on xmas day haahhaa š

Fantastic captures! Do you happen to know whether roos are similar to dogs who fight out a hierarchy and they keep it till, for example, the alpha male gets older and weaker, or to horses, who “forget” the hierarchy and decide over it each day again?
LikeLike
I belive some are born to be alpha or Boomers and yes as they weaken then other young males have a try but usually the alpha or boomer stay top dog..once established there is no forgetting š and thankyou I was very pleased to see them do this so close to home usually I miss this..lucky moment š hugs Fozziemum zz

I just double checked my info and apparently the reign of an alpha male is one year …kind of political I guess š

Do males when they get to a certain age get chased out of the mob by the dominant male? If yes, do the males make their own mob together or wander alone?
Hope you have had a good day. Sue & Polly

Hi Sue…just did a double check on some facts and apparently the top position lasts one year with the competition to be top quite strongly contested…roos rarely are loners their safety coming form their MOB or family group..one male has sole mating rights with ll the females of his mob..a lone roo is one that usually is off looking for females or a femal roo with a joey in pouch trying to keep herself safe. I like that the older one just ignored him at first, and then the rumble was over quickly. No harm, no foul, I guess. š

I agree..if humans could resolve problesm as quickly it would be a good thing š and yes he ignored hom for a long time..until the grab up the top of his tail clearly crossed a roo boundary š
