Pawing it forward- Being in a Pickle

Well as part of Savvy’s I would like to tell a story of rescue that I was called in to do.

Nearly nine years ago I was a volunteer at a no kill shelter called Victorian Animal Aid..i used to foster kittens..mums and newborns and kittens who were orphaned..either by loss of a mother or being dumped as rubbish.
These sweet darlings I would bottle feed..wipe their bottoms to encourage them to toilet and wash and dry them to prevent scald from urine.
This involved waking every three or four hours to tiny little hungry mouths..
If mums were with the bubs it meant letting mum have a break every now and then,as often these poor mums were not in good health or only babes themselves.some mum’s could not cope and they went back to a different foster to fatten up and get healthy while I looked after the bubs..sounds mean, but often these mums walked away from the babies and were not actively feeding or cleaning them.
I also spent time at the shelter, cleaning cages, playing with senior cats, or in the isolation ward tending the sick cats and kittens (this is how I adopted Dinnermintz)
So I received a call from the shelters Cattery manager Lyn, she asked me if I would meet the police at an address not far from where I lived as a woman had been taken in to mental health care and the house was filled with cats and kittens…urghhhh I knew this was going to be hard!

Hoarding is a terrible illness..and one that has far ranging effects, not the least the poor animals involved.
So armed with food I went down,i was met by the police who handed me a key and stood outside..
The entire front yard was swept bare just dust..and the smell from even the car was evident..the police would not come inside..in I went.
Horror..the smell was pure sulphur..it was pitch black (this was in the height of summer)there was no power.
My eyes adjusted slowly and the sounds of scurrying animals everywhere..i could make out buckets of dirt everywhere which were being used as litter trays..they were full of stench.Eyes were peering out from under rubbish and on top of who knows what was in there.
So I set about trying to get some feed down..my heart was breaking…there were two cages with birds in the kitchen and several bbq’s in there crammed in..where to start..
So I left..i rang the shelter and said to Lyn we need to get traps and get these cats out now! so in a period of about a week..after pleading with a larger shelter for help and getting nowhere our (little shelter was at capacity) eventually we started trying to trap some..most were almost insane with feral behaviour climbing curtains throwing themselves at windows..it was so distressing…
By now I had already been feeding them regularly, bringing in water and trays of litter some would shyly approach now but then scatter..the windows were boarded up so I could not let any light in.I worried that they all got food as I could never see who was eating and who wasn’t.
This one day I went down with my son…as we set about feeding them we heard a sound..a faint meow..we tried to see where it was coming from as it sounded stressed..a large dining room table had been placed with the top against the wall, my son moved it and down in between the wall and the table was a wee kitten..
We pulled the kitten out..and when I popped it on the floor it’s back legs splayed out and it was paralysed, it’s little head was badly misshapen..that was it I finally lost my cool..
We grabbed it up and left..poor little mite was being held by my son and it could not see..the light was too bright it had been born and lived in darkness.
I went to the Police station informed them I had removed the kitten and was going to my vet.
My vet Dr Findlay saw the kitten straight away..Sub Q fluids and I took it home.
When I rang Phil he said the kitten stays! which I had already decided 😉
This kitten I called Pickles..she was in a Pickle..
She has never really grown very big but has had a heart bigger than the world.
And now ,most likey due to her situation and the condition of her mother we have been told she most likely has FIV..would I have taken her in if I had known this then..YES..why..because it was the right thing to do for her..you see whatever happens down the track..whatever outcomes we have to face..our lives have been better for having our sweet girl in them..every animal deserves to feel loved and safe, fed and content and I could not ever guarantee that anyone else would give to this poor little sweetheart the life I knew I could.
Pickles is asleep on top of the couch tonight, tummy full, friends next to her, warm and cosy..she has played all day she has laid in the sun and she knows she is safe isn’t that what we all need ?
Thanks Savannah for allowing us to join your paw it forward blog hop..let’s all be aware of those who need us..

  1. My tears are running when I imagine the horror you saw in the house of this hoarder… and I’m so glad you gave Pickles the best furever home ever. It’s so sad that in so much cases where hoarders are involved the helpers come too late for the poor animals. I’m glad you where there at the right moment to find Pickles under this table…

  2. We always hear about the bad people who mistreat animals but, I think, far more people care about them and some, like yourself, are humanities shining light. I’ve never met you in person Bev, but I know that you would be someone I would get along well with.

I dreaded walking in but i had to..just knowing what was inside was what made me go..i am so lucky that I have Pickles..she was badly dehydrated and had her skull crushed..and bless her when I bought her home from the vet I popped her int he cool bathroom in a little bed and she ate and drank and purred her little heart out…she was my gift for being there..you may surprise yourself at what you can do when the time comes..thankyou for your lovely words 🙂 Bev xxxx

  6. Such an incredibly sad story and we all know these scenes are played out all over the world every day of the year but not necessarily with such positive results…..Pickles was one very lucky little thing that day for you to have found her in all that mess……it’s heartbreaking knowing that some animals NEVER know love and safety but Pickles has known that and “then some” thanks to you and your family Bev. Your efforts in rescue are wonderful…..everyone who has a tale to tell are angels.

  7. What a tale! How on earth could anyone imagine that hurting cats is justified. I know hoarding is a mental illness, but still.. Our hearts went out to all the animals in such a predicament. Our eyes are leaking cause we hate to hear or see any abuse but it happens, sadly. Thank heavens you got Pickles out of the ordeal. She is happy now in spite of perhaps having FIV.

    Kisses,

    • Same here..always worry that the house smells like cats and dogs but no..people actually say they would not know we had four cats and two dogs ..they obviously can’t see the fur on their clothes…we did have the ranger out to check on things when we got the permit for having four cats..she came in took one look at the girls sprawled out everywhere and just said..”nup no problem here at all” 🙂 I agree..i like it here too 🙂

  9. Yep, that’s what I call Paw It Forward action for sure Miss Bev. I did not know my Aussie gal pal Pickles was from a hoarding situation. How old is Pickles of I may ask…if she prefers not to share, that’s OK. We ladycats do like to keep some things private …paw pats, Savvy

  10. What a desperately sad and moving story, Bev. It breaks my heart to read about such a situation. I know people start with the best intentions and want to save every cat they see – and then it quickly gets out of hand. You are truly amazing to head into the house with food and water – and to rescue your beautiful Pickles. What a gorgeous-coloured kitty. We all need to hear these stories to remind us all to do our bit when it comes to animal welfare – even if it’s just donating food to shelters or organisations like the one you were a vital part of. Your last sentence really says it all for me: “let’s all be aware of those who need us.” Thanks for sharing this, Bev. xoxox

    • Thank you Dani…it was horrid but I got my girl out safely…the plice rang weeks later and said the woman wanted her cats back..i told them to contact the RSPCA who eventually helped albeit reluctantly to tka some of the cats and kittens we trapped..no way was Pickles going back..we sad she had died…sometimes you have to do what is best for the animal and clearly this woman was going to be a habitual hoarder..she is beautiful and has the sweetest demeanour 🙂 hugs to you and thankyou for your lovely words 🙂 Bev xxx

  11. Oh Pickles! I didn’t knows your story, and now my heart is so filled with happiness for you, because two angels found you and brought you back to life. There are a couple of ‘reality shows’ here in the states that are all about hoarders, and Ma used to watch them every once in a while (if only to say, see, my house isn’t THAT bad!! ☺), butts she could never watch any episode that had animals. It just broke her heart too much, and made her physically ill. God Bless those who go in and help. True angels on earth.
Ma is giving me extra hugs tonight in Pickles honor ♥
    Kisses,
    Ruby ♥

Both from the horror and heartbreak of such a tragic and dire situation and from the pure love and joy that is Pickles. God bless you for the work you do. And God bless those sweet souls, victims of hoarding situations, abandonment and abuse that need us so very much.

Your words and Pickles’ story will stay with me for a very long time.

  14. What an amazing story. I don’t understand hoarders–I do know the aftermath with the poor animals trapped in this environment is horrific. But there are people, like you, who do what’s right and sometimes there’s an outcome like Pickles. Thanks for what you did.

  15. That’s such a powerful and very moving story. I am thankful it brought you and Pickles together, but what a tragedy this is — as is the case with hoarding situations. We have seen them first hand, and it is always heartbreaking. Thank you for what you do, Bev.

    • Indeed it is heart breaking isn’t it…if only people could see how bad they were..maybe they would help these people before it got out of hand…the neighbours know..they have to..and surely there is more than one way to deal with it..i have fostered for awhile..we moved and since then I have been having a break..getting things safe here for our babies taking all our time..i am so glad I have my Pickles..she is a darling girl and safe and happy..which is all that matters:) Hugs Bev xx

  19. Bev…I can’t even begin to imagine…the trauma the poor cats went thru and the roller coaster of emotions you felt…..I don’t know whether to rejoice in that you found pickles or curse the situation she found her self in. I hope the individual that did this got the needed help; it’s a sad sad story no matter the perspective……laura ♥

    • Laura I am so glad for Pickles..but still get so angry for how I got her..the family did nothing to help this woman..and I am sure she was straight back to it as she felt it was her right..undesexed,not vetted or vacc’d,not cared for..not to mention the goats in the backyard…horrid…sad on many fronts..but for me my heart will always go to the animals..who have no say..yes you may be ill but you can refuse help the poor animals get no such option…Love Bev ❤ ❤

  23. It sure does Bev. I think one has to remain somewhat aloof from what is going on. I wear heart on sleeve & take things hard. I invest in the animals…maybe when one does it on a grander scale it is easier???
All I know is that I feel 4 leggeds sadness & hunger & pain.
Last nite Juno from 13th Street showed up here for food & a kind word. I called his owner & neither she or her 3 children were home & no one returned my call. It was raining again so I hope Juno got home safely & back inside…pisses me off when people are neglectful…….grrr…….

I have lost ALOT of faith in so called humanity too. However coming here to WP restored some of my faith…we see so much of the bad things happening & FB is plastered with heart wrenching stories & so many Shelters overcrowded.
I like to focus on success stories; I know you understand what I mean 😉

I’m so choked up….Pickles is beautiful:) So very sweet…I would have done the same thing for sure…I am so thankful that you rescued her:) I feel animals pain as well and it makes me sick to see abuse and neglect like no big deal…it drives me crazy. God made the animals first so hello humanity…bad humans grieve God’s heart in the awful awful things that they do to any animal. Animals have feeling and they can think better than most humans…and I could go on and on…it breaks my heart to hear awful stories of a poor animal suffering in the ways that you have seen. I commit to an animal as growing up on a ranch, that is what you do…I learned early on if I was going to have a pet or a horse I was responsible for caring for that animal and I try hard to do that. They just love us and we need to love them back and take care of every one of their needs!!! I’m so happy that Pickles is with you:) She is a Blessing Girl:)
