For those who asked

I know I have been showing lot’s of roo pictures and please let me know if it’s getting boring guys..i tend to get a little excited when I see them! I know I live with them all the time and I am an Aussie but I never take for granted the wonderful roos that we live with.
I have had a few really good questions about them and so I thought I would share some of the facts I know about these beautiful animals with you.

The Eastern Grey Kangaroo is the species we live with here..this amazing Roo is born 36 days after conception..the size of a Lima bean it ‘swims’ it’s way up to mums pouch on the fur she has licked in a trail..once inside mums pouch the tiny little joey latches on to a teat and clings firm ..mum has four teats..and this new baby will be here for at least 6 month..at which stage it will poke it’s head out of the pouch..it will hop out at about 8 months old but still be mainly reliant on mums milk up to 12-18 months..
Mum is amazing as she changes the protein levels in her milk according to joeys age!
She can become pregnant soon after having a joey and can keep that embryo in ‘limbo’ until the joey leaves the pouch..at which stage this little one begins life..this is in case the joey dies or leaves she always seems to be pregnant!! poor mum hey!

Females stay with the mob as they grow but the males leave to join bachelor mobs..as only one Alpha male is entitled to breed with the females.

A fully grown Eastern Grey Kangaroo averages 25-30 kilograms
The Males 55-65 kilograms with the Alpha male getting up to 80-90 kilos
Females stand at 1.8 metres and males at 2.2 meters
Adult males are called Boomers..Females called Does, Flyers or Jills.
The Eastern Grey can travel at a comfortable hopping speed (they do not run) of 20-25 km(13-16mph) but up to 70km(44mph) over a short distance.
If they need to they can sustain a speed of 40km(25mph) for a distance of 2km (1.2miles)
They can jump Horizontally 9 metres at full speed! they can leap 3 metres (10feet) high.
They cannot walk backwards and cannot use their hind legs independently on land but are good swimmers. They use their long tails as a tripod with their forelimbs (arms to me:) ) to move forward and also use these huge tails to balance on when boxing..they do this by raising their powerful hindlegs and kicking forward and then dragging the feet and claws down..they have been known to disembowel dogs when threatened and also when chased will head to water where they will use their legs to drown the dog or predator.
When distressed they will rub their hands together ..when they feel threatened they will stomp the ground to warn the MOB ..if they cannot jump a fence they will go under or crawl through..the safety of a mob means they can scatter if threatened and confuse the predators..mums and joey’s often try and keep out of this as it is scary for the young…
They make funny coughing chuffing sounds and I have heard this and it is quite bizarre indeed.
So there is a bit of info on the furry ones I share my home with and the pictures will show mobs on the run…jumping over fences ,climbing under and going through as you will see it depends on the size of the roo as to how they get out from a fenced yard.I was watching from my top paddock and a good distance and you will notice how the biggest male stands his ground and puffs his chest out to check me out..mums with curious joey’s poking out from the pouch and young ‘at foot’ joeys..i wonder when mums jump if the joeys get a little head ache!!!
I hope this answers some questions you had about these beautiful and intriguing creatures Marsupials known as Macropods πŸ™‚

  1. Oh I don’t think I could EVER get tired of hearing about and seeing the roos in your world. They’re gorgeous and fascinating and while you see them all the time, most of us never do except in enclosures in the zoo – seeing them in the wild, enjoying life, is WAY better!

    Hugs, Pam

  3. After all it seems the Roo’s are much better in all things than humans. Or have you seen a human who enters a fence with such an elegant leap? They really make noises? I always pondered what kind of noises they could make, now I know it! Thanks :o) I hope there will be always go people in Oz who protect them and who help them out when they are in need with bush fires or other dangerous things.

    • They are elegant indeed Easy πŸ™‚ so swift and graceful not at all like us bumbling humans….our wildlife services always are there to help these creatures in bushfire times…they can leap over 9meters of ground and avoid burnt soil…sadly roads and cars are one of the greatest tragedies..so to be careful at dawn and dusk when they are more likely moving across roads..i see too many who have been hit and it breaks my heart..but wildlife people go and check pouches for any young and try and at least rescue them..and yes strange noises..i think it may be on you tube somewhere this funny coughing sound…very unusual..but then Echindnas grunt and I am all my life an Aussie and only last year heard this for the first time!! πŸ™‚

  4. Interesting about the Roos. When I see them I can’t help but think of Kanga and Roo with Winnie the Pooh! Amazing about their birth and the time spent in the pouch and Mama Roo adjusting the “recipe” of her milk. Their faces, all of them looking towards you are precious!

    • Thanks Pix πŸ™‚ they are amazing indeed and if mum is feeding one that is out of the pouch she can be feeding a smaller one with a different recipe! hard working mums! and yes they all just look up like I am a weirdo…they may be right! Winnie the poo and Kanga always a fave as a kid for me πŸ™‚

    • Marg no they are completely wild..if I was to make them feel threatened I would be in strife πŸ™‚ I only go for a walk around the property and if I see them I take pics from a good distance..i have had a close encounter with one as we sort of came across each other by accident but I just lowered myself and allowed him to go on his way πŸ™‚ thank you for the lovely compliment I have a video up tomorrow of me trying to leave my street carefully hahhaha πŸ™‚

  11. I love the roo pics Bev and any videos. I love all my wallabies around here but would love some roos too. Thanks for the info, they are quite unique and interesting.
I watched a 2 part t.v. doco on ABC about 2 years ago of a guy a bit up North in W.A. who has been given a bit of land as a reserve. He looks after injured/ orphaned roos. He’s obsessed with them. Fascinating and hilarious show as he has some “interesting” relationships with some of his old regulars. 1 called “Roger” who chases him every day!
He lives in a tin shack. I don’t know if you can track it down, but it’s worth watching.

    • Thanks Rachel.i didn’t know what diseases you have problems with there…my sisters pet bun bun died from an airborne rabbit virus and she was shattered..she has not gotten a bun bun since as it is a real problem here 😦 hugs Bev xxx

      Like

      • Rabbit VHD(viral hemoradic disease) is an airbourne Virus and kills with in a couple of days, you don’t even know they have it ,one minute they are fine and the next they are they are gone, you sometimes see a bit of blood coming out of the nose or bottom but not always and its highly contagious among rabbits and no cure, used to have vaccinations for each VHD and Myxi but now its a combined one so much cheaper and easier,we had Speedy done so that he could go out when we were in Dorset as I knew there would probably be wild rabbits, but now we can make Speedy a mobile bunny too.
your sister if she chose to get another bunny should be able to get it vaccinated for both in Australia so that it wouldn’t happen again, its different in the US as both are very rare so they don’t have the vaccinations there plus I think a lot of pet bunnies are kept inside as they have a lot of preditors,xx Rachel
