Send your best thoughts to Forrest

Hi everyone, hot on the tail of the post I did about snakes we have had an encounter this morning.

We had the pups out the front yard,Phil was giving the sheepies some feed and I was changing the sheets on our bed…for some reason I opened the front door..to see Forrest rolling his head in the ground with a bit of saliva hanging out of his mouth…I knew straight away he had something…well he flung this thing in the air…a baby Eastern Brown snake approximately I foot long..i called him with treats and in he came ..Doc too..i yelled at Phil to get up here quick smart…the snake was still alive and we had to dispatch it..we needed to take it to the vet with us for identification and I am sorry but a live snake is not coming with me.

So Forrest seemed fine but of course the car trip was making him excited and pumping adrenalin which we didn’t want.

Dr Liz took one look explained it was what I thought a baby Eastern Brown..so we discussed what to do..she checked Forrests eyes his heart rate ..watched him walking etc…then we had to get a bloodsample…he freaked at the sound of the clippers but with all four of us we managed to get a sample..Dr Liz did the coagulation test..the limit being 15…Forrest had a 17 and she explained the sample was a really clean one so most likely he had been bitten..i almost burst nto tears but I didn’t want Forrest to get more stressed..so then Dr Liz explained the antivenene treatment…she would put a drip of fluids in then slowly administer the antiv. as too fats and they can go into anaphalaxis…we wrestled with poor Forrest again to get a dripline in and then we went back to the consult room to wait…liver treats made it all better..so we had been with Forrest and Dr Liz checking his vitals on and off..no reaction to the antiv. which is good…so once it was all in his system we went with Dr Liz and took Forrest to a cage to settle…of course when he saw doggies in the cage next to him he went bonkers again….they were Dr Rayya’s pups as she must have been in doing some work…so they of course just ignored Forrests barking.

So as I type this we are at home…Dr Liz will take a wee sample to check for blood and also the venom..sadly the babies are deadlier than the adults as they go full venom and crazy like teenagers…Forrest is so far ok he is not out of the woods yet and we await a call to say he is fine so we can bring him home…please send your prayers our way as my BOO BOO means the world to me and I want him home where he should be …

Thankyou Dr Liz and nurse Serina…

    • Indeed..it was too coincidental….or not..phew…Dr Liz and Serina were wonderful and we all acted so quickly I think we were incredibly lucky..not so lucky the snake who had to go to his maker ..so small and still could kill 15 adult humans even at that size…oh boy.what a day..sitting in the sunshine with both the pups late yesterday just thinking I was so lucky they were both with me…thanks Easy for your lovely care and concern 🙂 hugs Fozziemum xxxx

  8. Bev, I am so sorry your sweet Forrest had to endure this scary life threatening snake bite. We have mostly rattlesnakes around here and yes, the younger they are the stronger their venom. And sorry but I kill them if I find them as they shouldn’t be anywhere near where we actually live. But once, Souther Calif, we did have a young one in our garage and Peter sent him to his maker…I hope Forrest is now out of the watch zone and doing well. Linda

    • Thanks so much Linda…I hate to kill anything but 11 acres and it’s in our house yard….plus to positively id it at the vets..well even at this size it can kill 15 adults so it was not going to come in the car alive! We walk the pups on lead around the property during snake season to keep them and the snakes apart but this was different..i thank my lucky stars I just happened to see him..and that we acted quickly with great vets….Forrest is fine this morning he was up early busting for a wee from all the iv fluids and has just had brekkie and settled on his bed.. dodged a bullet!!! hugs Bev xx

  13. Glad to hear he is up and smiling today. I think you started a snake invite yesterday as after me saying I quite like red bellied blacks, I just went outside to feed my magpies and saw a metre
long slithering alongside the deck and went and got the camera, back in time to photograph it going under steps. So I will use other steps.

    Like

    • Oh dear….snake week! yep use the ther steps..they are beautiful the red-bellies…and much more demure than the old aggro Browns..pretty sure this one was a late summer hatchling about a month old I think so makes sense…there will be more so on watch they don’t have the smarts of an older brown…:) and thanks Forrest is just fine..huge relief!! I look forward to some pics 🙂 hugs Fozziemum x

      • In case you need a bit more snake saga this w’end….lol! I just went out to my water tanks, congratulating myself for actually remembering to not use those steps… coming back, bent over to pick up a bit of wood in the long grass… hello black snake literally a foot away from my hand! It didn’t move far just enough to let me know it was there. I haven’t bothered to mow what little grass was left as it is pretty much all dead anyway.
Yes I was wearing my snake skin shoes, but they are brown not black.

  17. Our snakes hibernate….with all the snow they have to. As it is almost April I think it will be a slow year for wildlfie & birds reproducing.
That is one reason I like 4 seasons….i would be nervous/scared to live somewhere with venomous critters & no hibernation period….
    I am a B-I-G chicken!!!!!

    • Yep when they strike and hold back venom…the adults do it as if they use all their venom on what they know is not food it takes a long time to re build their supply..the reason why juveniles are so bad because they haven’t yet learnt to control the release and will strike at anything…like teens…I am surely no SHERO hahahhahah 🙂 loves BEV XXX
