TIMELY REMINDER

Hi every one ,i have been a bit remiss at getting my second post on emergency prep up here ..due to the current situation in NSW with horrendous fires ravaging the bush I am now reminded of the importance of this post.

You see it is Spring..yes spring and I am remiss because apart from a few lovely days it has been colder than winter..today pouring rain..but the news reminds me that will change on a dime..you see the rain is great..but the grasses and undergrowth grow and then dry then burn..

We do a clean up every spring, but we have not had the weather to do so..wind has to be right, temp humidity etc..we don’t burn like idiots just necessary..by bumbling around in the bush we give the wildlife a chance to move away ..if something looks as if it has become a home it is left.

THE SUMMER DRY OUT

THE SUMMER DRY OUT

Anyway..i covered that a bit before so…my car is all but finished being packed. Photos and Documents ready to be moved for summer..two small suitcases with a change of clothes , toiletries, shoes for hubby and I packed and in.

The cat carriers are in the sewing room

..the girls will walk past them everyday get used to them and they are right there to go.

It bears remembering animals panic as do we..so on high risk day they are inside all of the animals with me ..the bedroom doors are closed..i found one time they took off under beds in different rooms and there is no time for this sort of mucking around.

The dogs have their leads inside with me. If you have cat enclosures remember to lock the access as they will get out and if you need to go then it’s a point of entry also for fire .This I also forgot last time.

Gas bottles turn the valve away from the house and switch off.

If you can back up things from your computer on to hard disk and keep it away from the house that is also a good idea.

To our go pack..here is Pickles with the kit…

Well done Pickles !

Well done Pickles !

Okay..vet documents..have them with you not separate in case they need emergency boarding.

Their medications are kept inside due to heat in a car over summer..their is cream for burns, sun protection (for both us and pets) eye drops, betadine, dust masks, bandaids, full first aid kit, torch, hand sanitizer, bite cream, water spray bottles to spray cats in carriers to keep them cool, radio scanner, jumper leads, emergency beacon, collapsible  water and feed bowls ,cat and dog food (not heaps as you will need enough only for a short time as you can access food later) also in the car two giant containers of water, dog harnesses, dog runs, blankets. My car is full of fuel and will stay that way .

Now this is a thing you may not think of ….

MY BABIES

MY BABIES

My precious babies..they will be with me..no matter what they are with me..sometimes people might not think about this, because you have them with you all the time you can forget ..remember the things you see each day may be forgotten..so what is precious to you..pack it early…

So …checklist..

DO YOU HAVE DOCUMENTS PHOTOS DISKS OUT

DO YOU HAVE PROVISIONS FOR YOUR ANIMALS AND YOURSELF

DO YOU HAVE VET PAPERS

DO YOU AHVE MEDICINES HUMAN AND PET PRESCRIPTIONS GLASSES

DO YOU HAVE MOBILE PHONE CHARGER ,BATTERIES FOR PORTABLE RADIOS SCANNERS TORCHES

DO YOU HAVE BEDDING FOR ANIMALS TOYS WATER WATER WATER

DO YOU HAVE FIRST AID FOR YOURSELF AND PETS

PET BOWLS LEADS RUNS COLLARS CAR HARNESSES

Remember animals panic and they pick up on your fears ..there could be thick smoke , day may become night you will be giving off an air of fear..so a comforting toy, blanket, and calm voice helps.

We actually do a trial a couple of times..on hot days, and this gets the girls used to being grabbed up and put in carriers, the dogs used to getting run into the car on a hot and yukky day.

I keep the scanner on all the time (it actually ran out of battery and started making it’s beeping early the  other morning..) I keep the mobile well charged also.

I have maps in my car of the area and have worked out which ways to go dependant on the threat.

I have also a small portable radio and of course the emergency apps on my phone..

The house is locked the windows are already closed on bad days, the curtains are kept open to keep an eye on the day, and the things I can’t leave in the car all season are next to the back door. The garden is soaked in the morning of a bad day.

Reality is the house is insured..there is nothing there that is worth dying for…when we were out of our old house during the Black Saturday Fires for a month we went back at one stage to check it was ok prior to what was possibly going to be a bad bad day..we had all the animals at the Victorian  Animal Aid Trust in Coldstream where they were safe,we had the sheep with a lovely family in a safe area and so we went ‘Home’ ..I can tell you..all our things were out as I have described above and all the fur babies were also not there..we went inside and I burst into tears…I realised ‘Home’ is not where you live it is who and what you live with..it felt empty in more ways than one.

LETS GO GRANNIE

LETS GO GRANNIE

I missed my animals I had not seen them for a month,we were living with our kids and the simplest things became stressful..our eldest son had his engagement party and getting ready I needed a little safety pin for something..there was none..i realised it’s these little tiny things you are so used to having access to that are not there..hubby and I the day before our town was mapped as possibly being wiped out, went to Mc Donalds just to get out and be normal..the wind was howling, the sky smoke hazed..we sat there looking at the signs blowing dreading what this would mean..everyone else seemed oblivious…you see for them it was over..it was one day of horror they went back to their daily life…it was surreal..In fact the day after Black Saturday the newspaper reported that 14 people were dead..the toll was in fact 173….not known for a long time …

Anyway this is a not perfect go kit list,it will be different for all but it may help with ideas…

I am going to head off now, i actually feel a bit teary..my next post I might go through some of the emotions that people go through when these crisis’s happen you may be surprised at the effect such events have on you and your pets.

STAY SAFE NSW..DON’T BE A HERO JUST GO IF IT’S SAFE..THOUGHTS WITH YOU ALL
